I am following the book, still in chapter 1. I have been uploading my projects in DropBox, and have the problem on two machines, one is Win7 the other is Win8.1

the Engine project compiled ok, did I miss something somewhere? where is the-lAdvanced2D supposed to be coming from?

That's a basic C++ question, not related to the book or engine code. Please join a C++ programmer's group to get basic help with the language or pick up a primer such as C++ for Game Developers (that's a good one since it only does console output, teaching just the language).

-l is a linker directive to link in a compiled library file into the executable.
